JOB BRIEF

The Civic Education and Scholarship unit is hiring a research assistant (RA) to support the Vice President of Civic Education and Scholarship and his work within the United States Institute of Peace (USIP). CES advances the part of USIP’s mandate from Congress that focuses on serving the American people through outreach across the U.S., fostering cutting-edge research on peace and conflict through the awarding of grants, fellowships, and scholarships, and creating educational resources and engagement opportunities for a broad public audience.

Pay: $17.00 - $18.00 hour

Work Schedule: An average of 20 hours per week

Work Location: This position is based at USIP's Washington, D.C., headquarters.

Expected Project Dates: September 2023

RESPONSIBILITIES
* Conduct research in support of the department’s scholarship and outreach to diverse domestic audiences.
* Craft concept notes, memos, speeches, and briefing slides on the work of the Civic Engagement and Scholarship unit, the history of the USIP, and developments related international peace and peacebuilding studies.
* Provide support for the unit’s work to track alumni, contacts, and relationships across the country, including updating databases and mapping connections.
* Assist program staff with online grants and fellowships competitions, including managing public outreach, filing systems, mailing lists; and the online application system (FLUXX)
* Provide event support, including setting up virtual meetings, reserving rooms/online platforms, developing invitations, monitoring RSVPs, arranging room/virtual set-up, serving as the primary point-of-contact for attendees, note-taking and drafting summaries of conclusions and tracking key decision points.
* Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
* Excellent written communication skills – the ability to prepare drafts quickly, and to write in an accessible way for non-expert audiences.
* Strong research skills – the ability to find information quickly, to analyze based on guidance and priorities, and to summarize and synthesize findings in useful formats.
* Strong interpersonal skills, including good humor and sound judgement.
* Experience with crafting briefing slide presentations, specifically PowerPoint software.
* Experience with databases that track contacts and relationships is highly desirable; experience with Salesforce or FLUXX is especially useful.
* Previous work experience in a fast-paced office environment is required.
* Candidates must be a current, full-time Masters student studying communications, international relations, international peace and conflict resolution, or another related subject.

USIP's Research Assistant program is administered through the Consortium of Universities. Any full-time university student are eligible for these openings.
