SUMMARY

The Director of USIP Publishing and Outreach, ACT will oversee publication operations for USIP as a whole, and lead the development and implementation of outreach efforts for the Center for Applied Conflict Transformation. The Director will work closely with USIP External Relations and Communications staffs to ensure seamless cooperation and collaboration as well as overall consistency in USIP branding, messaging, and public relations.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Publications Management & Leadership

  • Provide technical and strategic leadership within USIP for publications, including defining needs and opportunities to exercise thematic leadership for the peacebuilding field through books, reports, catalogs, and epubs.
  • Manage team of development, editorial, production, sales, marketing, rights, and design staff.
  • Manage the full life-cycle of the USIP publications process, including maintenance of the annual publications calendar.
  • Advise USIP programs on acquiring and preparing quality manuscripts for publication.
  • Coordinate with marketing team on dissemination strategy.
  • Serve as main contact for sponsoring program and authors through development process with a particular focus on editorial review to ensure the quality of manuscripts entering the publications pipeline.
  • Ensure quality control/assurance for blind peer review process and create revision plan with program, authors, and developmental editors.
  • Ensure all submissions meet USIP's quality and format guidelines and adhere to USIP permissions and art guidelines.
  • Schedule and prioritize projects according to resources, staff, and USIP and programmatic priorities and events.

Communications, Outreach, and Digital Engagement

  • Develop and implement ACT's communication, marketing, and digital engagement in close coordination with the USIP communications and digital teams.
  • Oversee all aspects of the communications activities for ACT, including content for publication, e-publication, social media and our website, as well as marketing.
  • Ensure alignment of ACT and USIP communication, branding, and messaging in order to build and maintain a consistent identity.
  • Act as liaison with USIP public affairs and communications team.
  • Shape and oversee dissemination plans for all ACT publications and online resources, including developing outreach calendars in collaboration and cooperation with program teams, publications, and public affairs.
  • Act as reviewer/approver for all ACT content for external audiences (to include op-eds, blogs, testimony, and fact sheets).
  • Coordinate media training and appearances by ACT staff and encourage increased media activity.

Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's degree or equivalent experience in a related field is required.
  • Minimum ten years of experience in publishing, including development, editorial, acquisitions, production and design, and sales and marketing,
  • Experience in scholarly publishing, particularly related to international affairs, is preferable.
  • Demonstrated experience in communication, outreach, and marketing.
  • Demonstrated experience in building and managing a team across all publishing departments.
  • Minimum five years supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated project and publication management experience.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and managing products across publishing platforms.
  • Work, education, or demonstrated interest in international affairs highly desirable.
  • Must have ability to work well with authors and USIP staff and leadership.
  • Must have excellent writing and editing skills as well as mastery of The Chicago Manual of Style.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Must have solid knowledge of Mac OS and MS Office Suite as well as a content management system, preferably Firebrand.
  • Adobe CC skills a plus.
