JOB BRIEF
The Higher Education Engagement (HEE) team is hiring a research assistant (RA) to support its work within USIP’s Civic Engagement and Scholarship (CES) Unit. HEE programmatic work is grounded in USIP’s role as a public institution and its congressional mandate to serve as a resource for the American public. HEE compliments the longstanding work of Public Engagement and Scholastic Competitions by focusing on the higher education community of colleges, universities, and higher education associations. HEE seeks to enhance awareness within the higher education community about the Institute’s resources for research, programming, and training.
Pay: Starting at $17.00 - $18.00 hour
Work Schedule: An average of 20 hours per week; up to 40 hours when school is not in session.
Work Location: This position is based at USIP's Washington, D.C., headquarters.
Expected Project Dates: September 2023
RESPONSIBILITIES
* In collaboration with HEE, plan and execute a needs assessment for HEE, a newly established sub-unit within the CES Unit. Needs assessment responsibilities include but are not limited to the following: creating data collection tools, conducting interviews, transcribing, coding, and analyzing qualitative data, and writing a final report.
* Conduct a literature review on topics such as, but not limited to: 1) public outreach efforts by public institutions; 2) university and public institution partnerships; 3) landscape of peace education/ conflict resolution programs in universities; and 4) effective mentoring programs and practices.
* Provide support for the team’s work to track contacts and relationships across the country, including updating databases and mapping connections.
* Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
* Strong research and/or monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL) skills.
* Knowledge and experience utilizing research and/evaluation methodologies (e.g., qualitative, quantitative, mixed method) and applied knowledge using data collection, qualitative coding, and analysis methodologies.
* Knowledge and experience using quantitative software.
* Excellent written communication skills. Experience writing MEL reports is highly desirable.
* Experience with databases that track contacts and relationships.
* Strong interpersonal skills, including good humor and sound judgement.
* Candidates must be a current, full-time Masters or PhD student studying higher education, international education, or similar area of study.
USIP's Research Assistant program is administered through the Consortium of Universities. Any full-time university student are eligible for these openings.
