JOB BRIEF

The USIP Publication team seeks an Associate Editor (scope of work contractor) to provide editorial project management, copyediting, and proofreading for USIP publications. This position is based in USIP’s Washington, DC headquarters, will work closely with the Publications Managing Editor, and will report directly to the Director of Publications and Outreach.

This is a scope of work contractor position at the rate of $55/hour.

RESPONSIBILITES

Manuscript and Copyediting

  • Complete substantive editing for USIP publications. This includes working with authors to develop or clarify a manuscript’s structural integrity, clarity of argument, strength of policy recommendations and conclusions, stylistic issues, consistency of tone and voice, and economy of language.
  • Track and report all stages of editorial development and production for projects in the publications editorial/production report.

Proofreading and Layout

  • Proofread formatted manuscripts; consolidate corrections; work with authors to resolve queries.
  • Input author and proofreading corrections into proofs using Adobe InDesign.

Communications and Relationship Management

  • Serve as liaison between the Publications Department, USIP programmatic teams, and authors regarding all stages of a project’s development, USIP quality guidelines, format specifications, sourcing, illustrative data, and style.

Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree is required.
  • Minimum five years of experience editing and proofreading using the Chicago Manual of Style.
  • Experience in scholarly publishing is highly preferred, particularly related to international affairs.

  • Active learner, with interest and ability to quickly learn from teammates and colleagues.

  • Exceptionally organized and detail oriented, with an ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines, while maintaining high standards of quality and tight editorial and production schedules.

  • Self-motivated with excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.

  • Must have keen ability to work well with and coach authors.

  • A sense of humor and collaborative approach.

  • Experience using Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, InCopy, Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat Professional) and publishing content management systems is highly preferred.

All USIP contract and employee positions are contingent upon the favorable completion of a suitability background investigation.

Compensation is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
